A droid is a robot in the Star Wars universe.
Construction
Droids are built according to purpose and this affects their look and structure.
Language
The intended purpose of a droid directly affects the languages it is able to speak. Some droids are unable to speak at all. Most droids can speak or understand electronic tones such as those "spoken" by R2-D2.
Memory
A Droid's memory can be completely erased (wiped). Memory wiping droids in this way is common if the droid is sold to a new owner. Droids are also commonly memory wiped to ensure that they are unable to remember something if it was secret. For this reason R2-D2 and C-3PO were memory wiped at the end of Revenge of the Sith.
Sentience
Droids are typically not self-aware. Instead, most droids give the appearance of sentience. There are only a few droids known to have sentience. Many of those that have either been created or have become sentient have become bounty hunters.
Disabling Droids
A droid can be disabled by the use of a special bolt or a well-placed ion blast, such as from a handheld ion blaster used by Jawas.
Types of Droids
Astromech Droids
Astromech droids are used to help a ships computer navigate and repair it if it becomes damaged. The most famous astromech droid is R2-D2.
Battledroids
Battle droids by the thousands were used by the Trade Federation in a failed attempt to invade and conquer Naboo.
- OOM-9 - battledroid commander.
Medic Droids
Probe Droids
Imperial probe droids led the Empire to find the hidden base on Hoth.
Protocol Droids
Protocol droids are "personal servant" droids who are often used as a butler or personal assistant. Because protocol droids work so closely with many humanoid lifeforms, they have been built to look (somewhat) humanoid and programmed to be non-violent.
- 4-LOM - protocol droid turned bounty hunter.
- C-3PO - gold protocol droid.
- Death Star Droid - black protocol droid
- K-3PO
- TC-14
Other Droids
- 4-LOM, protocol droid turned bounty hunter.
